Javier Garrido and Lucas Campagnolo continue their excellent run at the Dubai P1. After their controlled victory in the round of 32 against Arce/Lijó, the Spanish-Brazilian pair defeated the No. 4 seeds, Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas, at the end of a hard-fought and intense match: 3/6 6/4 6/4, a 1:56pm.
An extremely balanced match… but better managed by Garrido/Campa
The statistics sheet confirms the nature of a very close match:
- 50% of the points earned for each pairwhich perfectly illustrates the overall balance.
- But the gap opened up on the key points:
- Garrido / Campagnolo converted all their break points (100%)
- … while Nieto / Yanguas converted only one out of seven (15%).
This decisive efficiency largely explains the turnaround of the match after the first set was lost.
Notable differences in service
At your service:
- Nieto / Yanguas show a slight advantage in first-half percentage (72% vs. 68%)
- But Garrido / Campagnolo held their second ball better (45% against 50% for Nieto / Yanguas).
- In total, both teams played a comparable number of games:
- 15 service sets for Garrido / Campagnolo
- 14 service sets for Nieto / Yanguas
Here again, the Spanish conceded a little more pressure in the decisive moments.
A decisive return in the heat of the moment
Regarding returns:
- Garrido / Campa climb to 50% of points won on the opponent's second.which weighed heavily in the last two sets.
- Their ability to sustain long exchanges also allowed them to unsettle a Nieto / Yanguas team that had already been put in difficulty the day before against Gil / Sánchez.
A logical elimination for the No. 4 seed?
After a difficult first round, Nieto/Yanguas arrived with little room for error. The match confirmed their current struggles: inconsistency on the return, few winning points, and a lack of composure in crucial moments.
Conversely, Garrido and Campagnolo have confirmed their rise in power over the past several weeks, displaying better tactical coherence and a solidity that they sometimes lacked at the beginning of the season.
In the quarter-finals, the pair will face Momo González / Francisco Guerrero (ts8), particularly convincing since the start of the tournament. The Spaniards have not yet conceded a single set.
