The round of 16 day of Mexico MajorThe tournament, held in Acapulco, significantly reshuffled the deck, both for men and women. While the men's draw allowed the list of qualifiers for the Tour FinalsThe suspense remains high on the women's side, where several players are still in contention for the last available spot.
One of the highlights of the day was the departure of Carolina Navarrowho was playing the last match of her professional career in Acapulco. She was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Marina Guinart et Verónica VirsedaThe Spaniard brings to a close a career spanning more than three decades at the highest level. A symbolic conclusion, on a site linked to the very history of padel.
On a sporting level, Aranza Osoro and Alejandra Iglesias secured an important victory against Marta Ortega and Tamara Icardo (7/6(0) 6/2). This victory revives Osoro's prospects in the race for the Finals, even if the next round looks tricky against the world number 1 pair.
At the same time, Guinart and Virseda, also involved in qualifying for Barcelona, continued their journey after a match lasting more than three hours against Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga (6/7(3) 7/5 6/4). Their situation, however, remains dependent on cross-results.
The surprise of the day came from Lorena Rufo and Jessica Castelló, who have dismissed Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría in two sets (6-4, 6-4). A result with direct consequences on the end-of-season standings, consolidating the position of Gemma Triay and Delfina Brea at the top of the hierarchy.
At men's, Javi Garcia and Javi Barahona qualified for the quarter-finals after eliminating Mike Yanguas and Coki Nieto, seeded No. 3 (5/7 6/4 6/2). They will face Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger, winners in three sets of Javier Garrido and Lucas Campagnolo in a hard-fought match.
Another notable qualification is that of Sanyo Gutierrez and Gonzalo Alfonso, strong against Valentino Libaak and Eduardo Bautista. They will face Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto, authors of a controlled victory against Juan Tello and Álex Alonso, definitively eliminating them from the race for the Finals.
The quarter-final schedule is completed by Arturo Coello / Agustín Tapia, Franco Stupaczuk / Martin Di Nenno et Jon Sanz / Coki Navarro.
At this stage of the tournament, the sporting stakes clearly take precedence, with Friday expected to be based on well-defined principles, between hierarchy, pressure management and the fight for the last qualifications.
